Some Facts On The Basics of Window Glass Repair
Most homeowners have most likely dealt with broken window glasses. It could be a misdirected baseball come flying through from the kids playing nearby or a loose frame that smashed your window panes. For sure, many people have dealt with a window glass repair in their homes, offices or even in their cars. Naturally, when your glass windows are broken, you need to call in the experts in glass repair or window glass replacement depending on the amount of the damage. Glass can be dangerous for it could break into several sharp pieces that can cut or pierce you. So for such an emergency, get those with the training, experience and the right tools like a glass repair kit.
For an aluminum single pane window, your glass repair service will need to get the old glass out, measure the new glass and then install the window glass replacement. If your window is the sliding type, then most likely that only one slides to and fro while the other is stationary. If the sliding one is the one damaged then the service man will lift it up and then swing the bottom out. Sometimes the bottom will not easily budge so the rollers on top will be checked. There are instances that the top rollers are set in such a way that the slider cannot be removed. It only entails loosening the screw that holds the roller in place and then exerting some force, raised it up. That will push the rollers down, making it easy for you to remove the glass panel. Then this panel will be laid out and carefully measured adding half an inch to both its width and height. This is now the size of the new glass that will be installed as replacement.
The thickness of the old glass will also be measured. It will most likely be 1/8 of an inch or maybe slightly less. The thin glass panel is termed as single strength and measures about 3/32 inch. The 1/8 inch glass is the double strength glass. It is very important to know the exact measurements because ordering a thicker one will be doubly difficult to use the same frame for it. The small difference of 1/32 inch translates to a lot of difficulty. Do-it-yourself individuals often make the mistake of mismatching the new glass ending with a bigger problem on how to fit your glass panes to its frame. Your window glass repair will end up in utter failure because you cannot put everything together again.
After making the proper measurements and identifying what needs to be installed, the task of taking the frame apart begins with removal of all the 1/8 inch old glass window. Heavy gloves are necessary to avoid being cut by the razor sharp edges of the glass pane. The screws on each corner of the frame will be removed by working on the first two screws in opposite corners. For instance, if the bottom left screw is removed then the next one is the top right screw. Then using a rubber mallet, one of the corners will be slid off from the table where the screw has been removed. The frame is separated from the glass by gently tapping. The same thing is performed on the other half. Now two halves of the frame, a rubber piece and lots of glass is now on hand. The glass will be properly disposed of and the rubber cleaned, making sure that every little piece of glass shards are all removed.
The window glass repair now proceeds to the glass replacement by laying the new pane into a table with one long and short side beyond the edge. The rubber is then placed on the hanging sides. One half of the frame is placed against the glass by tapping first in one corner. The long edge is tapped onto the rubber until it is well placed before proceeding with the short one. The same is done on the other two sides until finally the screws are put back in the corners. Then you now have a brand new window.
It seems pretty easy but it can be tricky for beginners especially when the slightest error means a lot of difficulty. This is why the experts are at an advantage. They have years of experience in window glass repair so the task seem like a routine. With their 24/7 service, you can be sure that in cases of emergency you only need to make a phone call and your problem is fixed.
